Blog Assignment Part IV - March 24

Education in America has revolutionized the country forever. Throughout the decades, school improvements have helped students achieve the American dream they strive for. Although a difficult system for less fortunate students, everybody has access to a nationwide education to jump start their academic careers. In America, the education system is standard for all types of students. Each school has their own system of education that caters to their students needs and this depends on a multitude of implementations. For example, the type of tools the schools can provide students in and out of the classrooms. School choice improves public education because it benefits disadvantaged students, student morale and encourages positive mindsets. 

Disadvantaged students benefit from school choice. Students that come from less fortunate backgrounds have options to jump start their academic careers and stay consistent. In the book, School: The Story of American Public Education, Part IV discusses how improvement to public education has helped low-income students. In the section, A Nation at Risk? it states, “You want to improve public education?” says John Golle, a founder and chairman of Education Alternatives, Inc., a for-profit company. “The way to do it is compete with them. Allow them the chance to compete with private enterprise, and vice versa. That’s the way you’re going to make public education better.” In other words, he mentions how you must create risks otherwise nothing will ever happen to improve this situation. Furthermore, this section discusses how low-income students were able to improve their tests scores within the education system by having catered schooling that helped them adjust their statistics and mindsets.  

Student morale has helped school choice improve public education. This result stems from the better tests scores they can produce and being in an encouraging environment that helps them become successful students. In the book, it claims that, “In 1974, educators in East Harlem asked some of the district’s best teacher to create small, alternative public schools carving space as needed within existing buildings.” The results from these experiments showcased how, “East Harlem went from having twenty schools to having fifty-two schools in the same buildings.” Each school had its own focus and style.” Ultimately, this notes how the results from these separations created positive results from students by giving them choices to aid their schooling needs.  

Positive mindsets have helped students improve public education. Having a school choice has created environments where students feel encouraged to continue with their positive results. Creating positive results created strives where students want to attend better schools and continue with their academic excellence. However, this positive mindset applies to students who can reach these marks. For example, less fortunate students might not be able to have this mindset because of various reasons. Depending on a student’s financial situation, there are moments where this mindset does not apply. 

Throughout America, the public education system has created positive results for students nationwide. School investments are used to create better schooling for students that are in dire situations. Such as low-income students that are less than fortunate. Using different opportunities that arise from public education, students are able to further their studies and use different resources to continue their academic careers. School choice helps low-income students, their morale and encourages their positive mindsets. I believe this holds strong as positive results adhere from such decision.
